Baldwin Pontiac Solid Waster Transfer Station & Processing Facility Engineering Services, Permitting, and Consulting
Project Overview
The project site was the former Fiero Assembly Plant, part of the GM Pontiac North manufacturing campus, in Pontiac, Michigan. NTH assisted GFL in converting a portion of the property into a new solid waste transfer station and recycling facility. Services provided by NTH included a property condition survey, Environmental Site Assessment, conceptual and detailed facility site design/layout and construction observation. NTH guided GFL through the extensive permitting process, which included preparing a complete MDEQ Part 115 Construction Permit Application, City of Pontiac Site Plan Review process, SESC Soil Erosion Permitting, NPDES/OCWRC stormwater permitting and Part 55 Air pollution permitting.
Project Scope
NTH assisted GFL during property acquisition and for inclusion in Oakland County Solid Waste Management Plan. During this process, NTH provided an existing property condition survey, including assessment of existing structural, utility and other facility components for the eventual site re-use as a solid waste transfer and processing facility. NTH prepared several conceptual facility designs and site layouts, which helped GFL strategize and envision the ultimate endues for the facility as a regional solid waste handling, recycling, and processing facility, while incorporating existing facility buildings at the nearly 70-year old former automobile factory.
NTH, in conjunction with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection and other design subconsultants, developed detailed engineering construction documents to build-out a portion of the existing facility for re-use as a solid waste transfer and processing facility. NTH, responsible for the site-civil design components, navigated the labyrinth of existing site utilities to develop focused solutions for utilizing as much of the existing infrastructure as possible and developing new site utility design services for water, storm, and sanitary infrastructure.
Client Benefit
NTH’s broad range of consulting and engineering services, including infrastructure, geotechnical, environmental, site-civil, and construction observation, all came into play to transform a formerly unused industrial site into a productive segment of the regional solid waste management system.
