City of Lansing Wet Weather Control Program Phase II

Project Overview

The City of Lansing developed a Wet Weather Control Plan (WWCP) in 2012. This program was the first of its kind in the State of Michigan, if not the nation, to join all three unfunded mandates of the Federal Clean Water Act (CSO, SSO, and storm water programs) into a coordinated approach. This WWCP will allow for all costs for all of the programs to be spent in a responsible way that prioritizes public health and continues to protect the rivers and lakes using the same federal requirements. The impact of joining these three plans together results in a $230 million reduction in the overall cost of the three individual programs if completed separately for a total cost of $420 million over a period of approximately 40 years. NTH Consultants, Ltd. (NTH) is proud to have been selected as the city’s geotechnical, environmental, and construction materials testing engineering firm for the project.

Project Scope

NTH has been involved with this project for almost 20 years since the initial CSO projects undertaken by the City of Lansing. NTH will continue to support the City and the design team through the eventual completion of this important project.

Client Benefit

NTH collected subsurface data within the Grand River by drilling through and successfully patching the existing earth-filled arch bridge. The borings were cored through the bridge in a stepped (telescoping) fashion to facilitate sealing of the cored bridge hole and to prevent material from entering the river.
