Demolition of East Jordan Iron Works Foundry Complex

Project Overview

EJ Group retained NTH Consultants Ltd., through Warner, Norcross, and Judd, LLC to consult and develop demolition and site restoration plans and specifications of the former East Jordan Iron Works (EJIW) Foundry complex in East Jordan, Michigan.

Our initial role was to develop a demolition strategy and plan for the foundry and ancillary support structures focusing on environmental or regulatory issues that might impact EJ’s environmental liabilities, such as stormwater, dust, aboveground storage tanks (ASTs), underground storage tanks (USTs), asbestos-containing materials (ACM), and other potential universal and hazardous waste management issues.

Project Scope

After developing the demolition strategy, NTH conducted the Hazardous Materials Surveys on the foundry and ancillary buildings identified for demolition. NTH met with EJ to identify preliminary objectives for the site upon completion of the demolition activities. Using the demolition strategies and hazardous materials’ survey results, NTH prepared plans and specification for abatement, demolition work, and site restoration activities for bidding purposes. The site restoration included foundation removals and site grading, retaining walls, water intake removal from the lower arm of Lake Charlevoix, as well as utility shut-off requirements and relocations.

During demolition construction activities, NTH provided abatement monitoring, responding to RFIs, and unforeseen conditions, monitoring demolition progress, contract administration services, submittal reviews, substitution reviews and general construction support.

Client Benefit

NTH team’s experience and open communications with the Contractor and EJ created an atmosphere for focused teamwork and ownership responsibility resulting in a shared commitment to accomplishing EJ’s objectives throughout this successful project.
