Maple Road Rehabilitation

Project Overview

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) Rehabilitated Maple Road from Haggerty Road to Orchard Lake Road in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The approximately 4-mile long alignment consists of two to four lane asphalt surfaced roadway with occasional turn lanes and crossover lanes for left-turns. The rehabilitation included widening of the roadway at numerous locations to add turn lanes and/or extend paved shoulders, resurfacing of the existing pavement, new curb and gutter sections, and replacement of culverts and other subsurface utilities. RCOC retained NTH to explore the subsurface and develop design parameters for the new and rehabilitated pavement as well as for the replacement of an existing deep culvert crossing Maple Road. Services provided by NTH include pavement coring, soil boring, DCP testing, laboratory analyses, and design recommendations.

Project Scope

This segment of Maple Road was selected for rehabilitation by RCOC. The project divided into two segments; Drake Road to Orchard Lake Road and Haggerty Road to Drake Road. NTH completed the explorations and recommendations for each division in consecutive years and the construction was similarly spread across two construction seasons. Rehabilitation of Maple Road was considered due to the deteriorating pavement surface, the need for wider shoulders and additional turning lanes, the lack of curb and gutter in several sections, as well as the need to replace a deep culvert and other subsurface utilities.

Client Benefit

NTH developed the subsurface exploration locations and testing in conjunction with RCOC to maximize the information obtained in an effort to provide the most relevant information for design and construction of the rehabilitation.
