Telegraph Franklin Sewer Replacement Water Main Collapse and Sinkhole

Project Overview

In Southfield, Michigan, near the intersection of Franklin Road and US Highway 24 (Telegraph Road), a water main break led to the appearance of a large sinkhole. Further investigations indicated a portion of an existing 48-inch diameter sanitary sewer located below the watermain was collapsed and utilities including gas mains, storm sewers, other watermains, and communication lines were impacted.

Project Scope

NTH was retained by the owner to lead a design-build emergency rehabilitation of the collapsed sewer. Several rehabilitation alternatives were considered, including, relining of the collapsed sewer. Hydraulic requirements and other field challenges, including groundwater and soil conditions, led to the installation of a new 350 feet long, 24-inch diameter HDPE pipe using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) to replace the existing sewer under the highway. The new sewer was completed, the sinkhole area stabilized and backfilled, sanitary and storm sewers restored, the water main repaired, and the site restored.

Client Benefit

NTH’s combined expertise in emergency response, underground engineering, infrastructure rehabilitation, and construction contract administration allowed project stakeholders to restore traffic and utility service quickly, with minimal disruption to the community.
